Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

History is not only what happened. It is also what governments recorded, what empires classified, what communities remembered-and what later generations were taught to repeat. In Honoring My Ancestors, Richard A. Martinez reexamines familiar accounts of Garinagu history by returning to treaties, military correspondence, colonial and republican records, parish and genealogical sources, academic scholarship, and family and community memory. Rather than accepting colonial racial categories as neutral descriptions, he asks how those classifications were created, what political purposes they served, and how they continue to shape the historical representation of the Garinagu.Through nine interconnected short histories, the book follows the Garinagu from Yurumein-present-day Saint Vincent-through war, territorial dispossession, confinement on Balliceaux, and forced removal to Roatán. It then traces their negotiation with Spanish authorities, settlement at Trujillo and Cristales, movement westward along the northern coast of Honduras, participation in maritime trade, encounters with other Indigenous and regional populations, and struggles over land, citizenship, and political power. The collection also reconstructs the deeper history underlying the development of La Ceiba. It restores Pueblo Nuevo, Perú, Satuye, and the early Garinagu settlers of the Cangrejal area to a story too often begun decades later with the arrival of Olanchano migrants and the municipal creation of La Ceiba. This is not an attempt to replace one unquestioned origin story with another. It is an invitation to distinguish documentation from inference, colonial terminology from community identity, and historical evidence from repetition. Where the archive speaks clearly, the book follows it. Where it remains silent, that silence is acknowledged.Honoring My Ancestors places Garinagu historical agency, territorial belonging, and Indigenous self-understanding at the center of the story.Volume I: Yurumein, Honduras, and Territorial Reconstruction.
