Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Life & Times of Job Berry: Hillsborough, North Carolina, 1865-1890 is a richly researched collection of essays exploring the life of Reverend Job Berry and the people, institutions, and events that shaped Hillsborough during the turbulent years following the Civil War.Born into slavery and later emerging as a respected minister, community leader, educator, and advocate, Job Berry became an important figure in Hillsborough's Black community during Reconstruction. His life intersected with the rise of Freedmen's schools, the growth of African American churches, the struggle for education and political participation, and the challenges created by racism, violence, and social upheaval.Through contributions from historians, researchers, educators, and local writers, this volume places Berry's story within a broader portrait of nineteenth-century Hillsborough. Readers will encounter accounts of Reconstruction politics, apprenticeship laws, Black education, local churches, artisans, business owners, families, schools, cultural life, and the individuals who helped shape the community.Supported by archival records, photographs, historical documents, family histories, and local research, The Life & Times of Job Berry offers a detailed look at a transformative period in North Carolina history. It is both a community history and a tribute to the resilience, leadership, faith, and determination of people whose stories deserve to be remembered.
