Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In 1912, a young man from Oklahoma won two Olympic gold medals and was told by a king that he was the greatest athlete in the world. Within a year, both medals were taken from him. His name was Jim Thorpe, and his story is only the beginning.

Long before Europeans ever set foot on the continent, Native American nations had built sporting traditions that tested endurance, settled disputes and connected communities to the land itself. Lacrosse, born as a sacred contest among the Haudenosaunee, would one day become an Olympic sport, yet the very people who created it are still fighting for the right to compete under their own flag.

This book follows that story from its beginning to the present day. It traces the runners, wrestlers, ball players and Olympic champions whose achievements were ignored, exploited or erased by the country that claimed to have discovered them first. It follows the fight for recognition that continues right now, as the Haudenosaunee Nationals push for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics under their own name.

This is a story about talent that was never in question, and recognition that has never come easily. It asks a simple question that still has no clear answer: how much does a people have to prove before the world calls them champions on their own terms?
