Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

An hour into his life, two people covered in blood stood in a Hollywood doctor's office, arguing over his soul. One was a woman who wanted to plant the placenta in her rose garden, returning what had nourished him to the earth. The other was his godfather: Korean War veteran, gourmet chef, amateur astronomer, Sasquatch enthusiast, and the most intellectually alive person he would ever know, certain that a soul could be lost that way.Chris Peacock grew up watched by people who believed in things the rest of the world had agreed to stop believing in. A one-armed concert pianist who survived the Spanish Civil War and fell through a skylight. A dowser who handed him the instrument on a mountainside and let him feel the water moving underground. A Jesuit great-uncle whose papers held the family's oldest questions. None of them tried to make him into anything. They saw what was already there, and they stayed long enough to be believed. It took him fifty years to understand what they had been doing. They were witnesses. This is a memoir about being seen before you can see yourself. About a family business whose collapse he spent twenty-five years believing was his to fix. About building, losing, and selling companies that were never quite the point. And about the moment the watching reverses, when the son who was witnessed all his life becomes the witness in his parents' final years. His mother's people signed their letters home from the Civil War with four words he is only now ready to claim as his own.Yours while life remains.
