Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Hidden Architecture of the Lotus SūtraBefore one can properly read the Lotus Sūtra, one must understand its hidden architecture. In the Fahua Xuanyi-The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra-Master Zhiyi, the great systematizer of Chinese Buddhism, reveals that architecture in full: a complete map of reality and of the Buddha's activity, in which the Ultimate Truth is present in every moment of ordinary experience.Delivered as lectures and recorded by Zhiyi's disciple Guanding, the Xuanyi became the philosophical cornerstone of the Tiantai school-and, through it, of Tendai, Nichiren, and every East Asian tradition that reads the Lotus as the Buddha's supreme teaching. This English Reader Edition from the Tiantai Teachings Project presents Zhiyi's masterwork complete in ten fascicles as a clean, continuous reading text. The doctrinal precision of the translation is preserved in full; the interleaved Classical Chinese and scholarly apparatus of the critical edition are set aside so the argument can be followed on its own terms.Inside this volume: - The Seven Interpretations-a layered analysis of the sūtra's title, revealing the relationship between the Trace (historical) and Fundamental (eternal) teachings- The Ten Subtleties-a systematic account of Reality (Truth, Wisdom, Practice) and the Buddha's activity (Powers, Preaching, Benefits)- The Six Identities-a map of the path that guards against both arrogance and discouragement- The Five Periods and Four Teachings-Zhiyi's celebrated classification of the Buddha's entire preaching career, with the Lotus at its summit- Guanding's "King of Prefaces"-the celebrated preface praised as the finest ever writtenPerfect for: practitioners and general readers of the Lotus Sūtra, students of Tiantai, Tendai, Nichiren, Chan, and Zen, and reading groups beginning the Tiantai Teachings Project series. Readers seeking the bilingual text with full scholarly apparatus should see the companion critical edition.
