Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In air-handling systems, condensate drainage is often treated as a simple detail: provide a drain pan, connect a pipe, install a P-trap, and allow the water to flow away. Yet in many draw-through air-handling units, this apparently simple arrangement can become a surprisingly complex engineering problem. The hidden variable is negative static pressure. When a fan is installed downstream of a cooling coil, the fan creates a vacuum-like condition within the coil and drain-pan section of the air-handling unit. If the condensate trap is not properly sized for this negative pressure, the system can behave in ways that appear mysterious. Water may remain in the drain pan, the trap may fail to discharge, air may be pulled through the drain connection, or a high-water-level alarm may appear even though the downstream drain line is completely open. These are the phantom water-level faults addressed in this book. The problem becomes even more challenging with modern variable-speed and high-turndown fans. Static pressure can change substantially as airflow and system resistance vary. A trap that performs perfectly at one operating point may lose its effectiveness at another. Consequently, designing a condensate drain system based only on nominal fan conditions can leave an important operating condition unprotected. This book approaches the problem from an engineering perspective. It examines the relationship between fan static pressure, water-column height, trap seal depth, condensate flow, drain-line configuration, and operating conditions. The objective is not simply to provide a rule of thumb for trap dimensions, but to establish a systematic method for understanding why a trap works, why it fails, and how to design one with an appropriate margin of safety. The discussion is intended for HVAC engineers, MEP consultants, mechanical designers, commissioning professionals, facility managers, controls engineers, and technicians who encounter condensate drainage problems in AHUs, fan-coil units, rooftop units, and other draw-through systems.A properly engineered P-trap is more than a piece of plumbing. It is a pressure-control device that allows condensate to leave a negatively pressurized air system without allowing uncontrolled air movement through the drainage connection. That distinction is the foundation of this book. The goal is simple: eliminate the phantom fault by understanding the physics behind it.
