Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

On September 16, 1920, private investigator Cornelius O'Brien is following an unfaithful husband through Manhattan's financial district when a horse-drawn wagon explodes on Wall Street. For O'Brien, a former Marine still carrying the physical and psychological scars of France, the blast turns New York into a battlefield again. But while the authorities search for those responsible for the bombing, another mystery is already taking shape. The following morning, wealthy financier Henry Vale hires O'Brien to find his missing twenty-four-year-old son, Edward. A scorched wallet bearing Edward's name has been recovered near the site of the explosion-but Edward had no reason to be on Wall Street that day. What begins as a search for one missing man soon leads O'Brien into a world of private banking, veterans' charities, suspicious accounts and carefully protected secrets. Edward had been asking questions before he disappeared, and someone appears determined to make certain those questions remain unanswered. With Detective Vincent Moretti, photographer Eli Brooks and Broadway performer Kit Darcy drawn into his orbit, O'Brien follows a trail through Prohibition-era New York, where respectable offices can conceal darker crimes than anything found in a back-alley speakeasy. And the deeper he digs, the harder it becomes to tell whether the Wall Street catastrophe has concealed a crime-or provided someone with the perfect opportunity to commit one.The Thirty-Ninth Dead is an atmospheric historical mystery about murder, money, loyalty and the unfinished business of war.
