The Universe Is a Hedgehog, the Mind Is a Fox

Isaiah Berlin and the Limits of a Single Idea

Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A Greek poet left behind a single line about a fox and a hedgehog. Twenty-six centuries later, an Oxford professor who had watched a man torn apart by a crowd in Petrograd turned that line into the most famous classification in modern thought, then spent the rest of his life insisting he had meant it as a joke.Isaiah Berlin distrusted big ideas the way a burned child distrusts the stove. He argued that our deepest values genuinely collide, that no formula reconciles them, and that everyone who has ever promised a final answer has eventually needed somebody to enforce it. He wrote almost nothing by hand, dictated his masterpieces into a tape recorder, and changed the century by talking. This book takes him seriously and then argues with him. Boris Kriger builds precisely the kind of unified structural theory Berlin warned against, and he says so on page one. What follows is not a monument but a quarrel: about whether the universe runs on a single generative act, about whether the plurality we experience belongs to the world or to the mind that looks at it, and about who is entitled to a guarantee.Along the way: a night in Leningrad in 1945 that a poet paid for over twenty years, a Nobel laureate who claimed Berlin spoke Russian faster than English, a surname that turns out to mean neither a city nor a philosopher but a bear, and a running investigation into how the most closed establishment in Europe adopted a Russian Jew from Riga who never once pretended to be English.Written for readers who enjoy watching two positions fight fairly, with no mathematics, considerable irreverence, and an author honest enough to lose several rounds on purpose.KEYWORDSvalue pluralism, liberty, intellectual history, systems theory, Russian thought, philosophy of science, twentieth-century ideas
