It's a technical job - LiDAR data, hydraulic models, regulatory paperwork. Sylvie is good at technical jobs. She arrives in early October with her field equipment and six weeks to produce a map accurate enough to withstand federal review, and she expects the usual resistance: a selectman who doesn't want bad news, residents who don't want their insurance rates to change, a town that has been operating on a fiction for thirty years.

What she doesn't expect is the berm.

The old Aldrich Mill impoundment sits above the lower village on a tidal river bend, held in place by an earthen embankment that hasn't been officially maintained since 1978. Without it, the lower village floods. With it, the town has been living under a quiet arrangement it never formally acknowledged.

Someone has been maintaining that berm. The evidence is in the materials invoices, the standpipe labeled 2019, the sound toe drainage on a structure that should have failed a decade ago. Fourteen years of correct, careful, unauthorized work - and all of it is about to appear in a federal document.

Town road commissioner Garen Finch has been doing the math since 2009. He knows what the map is going to say. He knows what happens to the lower village if the regulatory process goes the wrong way. And he knows that the engineer running the transects in the rain is not going to flinch from the accurate answer, even when the accurate answer costs something.

The Millpond Line is a slow-burn clean romance about precision and consequence, the gap between what a map says and what the ground does, and two people who show each other who they are through the work they won't set down.
