Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In The Battle of Mycale: The Victory That Broke Persian Power in the Aegean, Jack Whitaker tells the dramatic story of the battle that brought Xerxes' great invasion to its final conclusion and carried the war onto the shores of the Persian Empire. In 479 BC, an allied Greek fleet crossed the Aegean to confront Persian forces gathered beneath Mount Mycale on the coast of Asia Minor. When the Persians hauled their ships ashore and fortified their position, the Greeks landed, advanced against the defenses, and fought a decisive battle that ended with the Persian fleet in flames.

Drawing on ancient accounts and the geography of the Ionian coast, Whitaker reconstructs the campaign from the uneasy loyalties of the Ionian Greeks to the assault on the Persian camp and the destruction of the ships that had once threatened Greece. He explores the commanders, soldiers, sailors, and political calculations behind a victory too often overshadowed by Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea.

More than the story of a single battle, this book reveals how Mycale transformed the Greco-Persian Wars. The victory weakened Persian power in the Aegean, opened the way for the liberation of the Ionian cities, and helped shift the Greeks from defending their homeland to carrying the war into Persian territory, setting the stage for Athens' rise as the dominant naval power of the Greek world.
