Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Some memories refuse to stay buried. When architect Kenji Tanaka learns that his estranged grandfather has died, he expects nothing more than an unwanted inheritance.Instead, he receives a condition. To keep his grandfather's century-old Kyoto machiya, Kenji must restore its neglected garden exactly as his grandfather described-or surrender the property to the city.Kenji knows buildings. He understands steel, glass, concrete, measurements, and precise geometry. He knows almost nothing about moss. But beneath the neglected garden lies something his grandfather spent decades protecting: a rare living moss connected to the forests of Yakushima, an old family secret, and a woman named Emi whose existence Kenji's family never told him about. With the help of Aiko, a quiet and fiercely knowledgeable botanist, Kenji begins rebuilding the garden. What starts as an impossible restoration becomes a journey into the past. The deeper Kenji searches, the more he discovers that his grandfather's garden was never simply a garden. Its stones, water, soil, light, and moss were carefully arranged to preserve something that could not be recorded in photographs or family stories.Something remembered by the earth itself. As the deadline approaches and developers close in on the historic property, Kenji must decide what is worth preserving-and what must finally be allowed to change.Set between the ancient streets of Kyoto and the rainforests of Yakushima, Memory of Moss is an atmospheric literary novel about family, grief, love, memory, nature, and the quiet things we leave behind.
