This book began as a speech and then became a much larger living educational manuscript with in me. Somewhere along the way, the message put on a suit, picked up a clipboard and became very serious. The trouble is that children rarely fall in love with people carrying clipboards. My original message was never really about a method. It was about a moment: the moment a child feels seen. It was about trust before teaching, connection before correction, and the dangerous little lie that begins when a learner thinks, "There must be something wrong with me."So, I came back to the story.I came back to the little girl who ran back to the car on her first day of school. I came back to the blanket in the corner of the classroom. I came back to the teacher who understood that comfort was not a reward to be earned after learning; for me, comfort was part of the doorway into learning. I came back to parents who became a bridge when school and child could not quite reach one another. I came back to students who reminded me again and again that intelligence can arrive wearing overalls, carrying a cricket bat, drawing in the margin, talking too much, talking too little, dismantling a truck in their imagination, or staring out of a window because the lesson has already lost them. This way of seeing children did not begin with me. It began on the shores of Durban, during apartheid, with my great-grandfather, Reverend B. L. Sigamoney, who opened a boxing club with Nelson Mandela and then started St Aiden's, the first school for Indian boys. It continued through my grandmother, Marjorie Sigamoney, the first female Indian principal in her community, and through both my grandfathers, Reginald and Desmond Sigamoney, who taught thousands of children in their own homes, in their own way. I am not the first Sigamoney to believe a child deserves more patience than a system usually gives them. I am simply the one writing it down. And I came back to one stubborn sentence: I am not a product.
