The same woman has been standing behind Camille Rowan her entire life.Camille just doesn't remember her. After her mother's death, thirty-six-year-old Camille returns to her childhood home to clean out decades of belongings. Hidden in the back of a locked closet, she finds boxes filled with family photographs. Her fifth birthday.Christmas mornings.Prom.College graduation. Her wedding. And in almost every picture is the same unidentified woman.Sometimes she's across the street.Sometimes reflected in a mirror.Sometimes standing at the edge of a crowd.Always watching Camille.Camille has no memory of ever meeting her. When she asks her family who the woman is, the answers make even less sense. Her aunt says she was her mother's college roommate. Her uncle says they worked together. Her grandmother claims she has never seen the woman before. And Camille's father gives only one instruction: Throw the photographs away. Then Camille finds a picture taken before she was born. Her heavily pregnant mother, Celeste Rowan, is standing beside the mysterious woman, both of them touching Celeste's stomach.Written on the back are six words: ONE OF US GETS TO KEEP HER.Camille begins searching for the woman and finally finds a name: Vivian Cross. There's only one problem.Vivian Cross supposedly died thirty-seven years ago.A year before Camille was born. But the woman in Camille's wedding photograph was very much alive six years ago.As Camille digs deeper, the life she thought she knew begins falling apart. Her birth certificate was filed almost a year late.Childhood records were altered.Old videos suggest Camille once knew Vivian. And a stranger sends Camille a photograph of two little girls standing together. One is Camille. The other is identified as Corinne Cross.Camille has never had a sister. At least, that's what her family has always told her.Soon Camille uncovers the story of two mothers, two little girls, a suspicious death, a missing child, and a secret powerful enough to make an entire family rewrite the past. Then Camille finds school records belonging to Corinne.Every record contains Camille's childhood photograph. Now the question isn't simply who the woman in the pictures is.It's something far more terrifying: Is Camille even Camille? And when she finally finds Vivian alive and living under another name, the woman tells her: "I wasn't waiting for you to find me. I was waiting for you to remember which one you are."THE WOMAN BEHIND ME is a twist-filled mystery about buried family secrets, stolen identities, childhood memories, missing girls, and the dangerous lies parents tell when the truth is too terrible to survive.Because sometimes the person hiding in the background of your family photographs...knows more about your life than you do.
