A conveyor indexing linkage is a pure geometry problem right up to the moment its crank has to be sized, its pivots have to become real bearings, and its driving motor has to reach it through a gearbox. At that moment it becomes two problems at once, and most engineers were taught those two problems a year apart.

Mechanism theory and component design are usually separated by the curriculum. Linkages, cams, and gear trains belong to one course, where the question is what moves and how fast. Shafts, bearings, springs, and bolted joints belong to another, where the question is whether the part survives the load. No real machine respects that division, so the connection has to be assembled privately, without help.

This handbook supplies the missing connection, treating motion and the transmission of motion as one continuous subject across sixteen chapters. Methods are built from stated assumptions rather than asserted.
