Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The second pillar of the creed goes to trial.

If God is three, the claim runs, then one of the three came down and took a body: complete God and complete man in one hypostasis, without confusion and without separation. This volume weighs that claim in eighty questions.

The core is weighed by reason; the councils that shaped it, from Ephesus to Chalcedon to Constantinople, by their own recorded history; the exchange of properties by the rules of its own grammar; and Christ himself by the words their own gospels place in his mouth - his testimony about himself, his titles, his signs, and his human states.

The method is stated before it is used. The Definition of Chalcedon is given whole before it is examined. Every scriptural quotation is collated word for word against the Revised Standard Version; the councils are cited from Tanner, the definitions from Denzinger-Hünermann, the Catechism in its official English.

Not one argument in this book is raised against Christ, peace be upon him. Every argument is raised against a claim ascribed to him which, on the showing of their own texts, he never made - and where a report ran between keeping him above reproach and faulting him, he is kept above reproach and the difficulty is returned to the text or to the claim.

Three instruments are used and no fourth: a rational proof of impossibility, their own texts against themselves, and stated scales for preferring one reading over another. The scales are printed so that they can be checked, and turned upon the author's own school as readily as upon anyone else's.

The judge is the reader.
