The Internet Was Built for a World That No Longer Exists

Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The internet was promised to us as a nervous system for the species. What arrived was a tollbooth. This book begins with an ordinary humiliation. A letter is sent to a neighbor in the next town. Both people want the letter. Neither is a stranger, a spammer, or a salesman. The machine accepts the letter, reports success, and quietly destroys it. Nobody is told. In the seventeenth century a merchant who sent a letter by sea knew he was gambling, and behaved accordingly. Today the gamble is concealed behind a green checkmark.Peter Kriger argues that this small disappearance is not a glitch but a signature. Search that cannot be searched, feeds that repeat what was already seen, archives that vanish with their owner, and answers delivered in confident prose by machines that never mention what they failed to find are all expressions of one architecture: a system in which obstruction is profitable, passage is not, and the instrument that would have shown the difference was removed as an unnecessary expense.>Keywords: internet, technology criticism, monopoly, information, communication, attention economy, digital culture
