Dear reader, this book is based on our research into the philosophical genre, which we have been conducting since 2000 and which subsequently expanded to include the historiographical genre from 2008 onwards. Almost twenty years later, the main theses have been expanded and refined in terms of concepts and reflections, with the overall aim of refining the interpretative framework for ancient genres so that we may avoid fallacies concerning the past. Here, our purpose is, first and foremost, to present the ars historica as a subgenre of the epidictic, with its structure and style authorised by Aristotelian and Horatian poetics, insofar as they concern the natural order of discourse (in ordo naturalis) and the imitation of painting (ut pictura poesis). Its discursive virtues - truth, clarity and judgement - articulate decorum and invention linked to utility, and to the deliberative and judicial genres. In a second phase, we examine the Portuguese specificity through the historical work of Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649): how providentialist origins and eschatology (divine intervention manifesting itself from the beginning to the end of events) regulate the variables of the ars, utility and the invention of auctoritates.
