Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

In The Battle of Marathon: The Greek Victory That Halted the Persian Invasion, Jack Whitaker tells the dramatic story of the 490 BC battle that pitted the citizen soldiers of Athens against the forces of the mighty Persian Empire. On the coastal plain of Marathon, an Athenian army reinforced by a small contingent from Plataea faced an invasion sent by Darius I to punish Athens and extend Persian power into mainland Greece. Outnumbered and uncertain whether help would arrive from Sparta, the Greeks chose to attack, advancing across the open plain into Persian missile fire before closing in a brutal contest of spear, shield, and discipline.

Drawing on ancient accounts, archaeological evidence, and the geography of the battlefield, Whitaker reconstructs the campaign from the Ionian Revolt and the Persian crossing of the Aegean to the desperate fighting at Marathon and the Athenians' rapid return to defend their city. He explores the leadership of Miltiades, the famous mission of Pheidippides, the tactics of the hoplite phalanx, and the maneuver that turned a dangerous struggle at the Greek center into a decisive victory on the wings.

More than the story of a single battle, this book examines how Marathon became one of the defining events of the ancient world. The victory preserved Athens at a critical moment in its political development, gave the Greeks confidence before the far greater Persian invasion a decade later, and inspired a legend that would endure for more than two thousand years. From the burial mound still standing on the Marathon plain to the modern race that carries its name, Whitaker reveals how one day of battle became a lasting symbol of courage, endurance, and resistance against overwhelming power.
