Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

A concise, readable history of Winter Springs, Florida, the Seminole County city that took a century to settle on its own name. It begins on the marshy south shore of Lake Jesup, where steamboat wharfs made an improbable port in the 1870s, and follows the vanished railroad village of Wagner and its dead man's curve, the vegetable fortune of the Bryant plantation, and the 1959 incorporation as North Orlando, a village named by a development company whose principals never lived there. At its center is the naming saga no other suburb can match: the failed 1966 rename with its postcard ballot of Ranch City, Norlando, Casanolo, and Semino; the 3,500-acre annexation that doubled the town; and the week in 1972 when the council voted to call it Semoran before residents forced the unanimous reversal that made it Winter Springs, after the development it had just absorbed. It ends with the town that built its downtown last, a New Urbanist Town Center raised from scratch where a suburb of subdivisions had never had a middle. Written from public records, census returns, and the regional history record, it anchors its dates to their sources and says plainly where the record disagrees with itself. Ten short chapters, with a timeline and a guide to where the history is still standing.
