Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

When cascading failures disrupt power, fuel, freight, communications, and public safety across the Midwest, Omaha firefighter Elias Mercer finds himself pulled into a crisis no single agency can solve. What begins with delayed ambulances, empty shelves, unreliable power, and strained supply lines quickly becomes something larger. As communities struggle to keep hospitals running, shelters warm, and essential supplies moving, Elias helps build an improvised network of firefighters, medical workers, local officials, volunteers, businesses, faith communities, and ordinary neighbors. But restoring order is only the beginning. As shortages deepen and competing visions of authority emerge, the people holding the region together must confront harder questions. Who gets scarce resources? Who has the right to make those decisions? When does emergency authority become power? And what does a free society owe its neighbors when the systems everyone depended on begin to fail?Set against a recognizable American heartland of firehouses, county roads, hospitals, churches, truck routes, community centers, and kitchen tables, The Heartland Compact is a grounded speculative novel about crisis, leadership, civic trust, accountability, and the quiet courage of people who keep showing up for one another.Because when institutions begin to fail, survival may depend less on who takes control than on who is still willing to be a neighbor.
