Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Every culture keeps a story about the price of power. In some places, it is a fisherman who catches a wish-granting fish and loses everything trying to catch a bigger one. In others, it is a king who asks the gods for gold and finds he can no longer touch his own daughter. In Yorùbá land, the old people tell it a different way. They say power is never given. It is only ever opened a door pulled ajar inside a person who was already carrying a room behind it, waiting. This is a story about one such door.Adésoyè was an ordinary boy from an ordinary town called Òrókí, a name that means "sorrow has turned to joy," though for a long stretch of this book, it will not feel that way at all. He loved his mother's hands, blue with the indigo she was famous for. He loved his little sister's stubborn belief that the world owed good children something back, if only they were patient enough to collect it, one firefly at a time. He was not looking for greatness. He was looking for medicine. What he found instead was Òfé the gift of closing the space between two points, of stepping through the whole world the way other people step through a doorway. And what he learned, slowly and painfully, is a lesson every generation seems to need told to it again: that a gift handed over by someone with cruelty in his heart will always come wrapped in a debt far larger than it first appears. This book follows Adésoyè through that debt through the compound of a native doctor named Adéníràn, a man who once tried to heal his village and decided, after failing, that healing was never bold enough a goal; through the quiet horror of becoming a weapon in small, deniable steps, one order at a time; and finally, through rescue at the hands of a woman named Adáhunṣe, who believes and spends her whole life proving that no gift is born evil, only mistaught.Along the way, you will meet a boy named Bọdẹ, whose gift is small and mostly useless and who insists, loudly and often, that this makes him more interesting, not less. You will meet a girl named Fọláṣadé, who can see the shape of danger long before she can see its face. And you will meet a government handler named Ọdúnayọ, who never once raises her voice, and is somehow the most frightening person in the whole story because of it.This is a Yorùbá story, told with Yorùbá names, Yorùbá proverbs, and a Yorùbá understanding of what power actually costs a person who did not ask for it. But underneath the names, it is asking the same question every good story about power has always asked, in every language, in every corner of the world.
