In the early '90s, five friends just out of college bought a hurricane wreck, fixed it up, and sailed it around the world. Then the crew spent the next year-and several thousand hours-bringing her back to life.In October of 1992, the crew left home for what would turn out to be a two-and-a-half-year circumnavigation of the globe, covering almost 30,000 nautical miles and stopping in roughly 40 ports. They would sail through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific, stopping at Easter Island, Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Fiji, along with many other fabled islands of the South Seas. After a six-month layover in New Zealand to replenish funds, Lazarus sailed over the top of Australia, around South Africa, and up the Atlantic, with a brief detour to sail 100 miles up the Amazon River.All five returned home in May of 1995 with five tales from the adventure of a lifetime. This is one of those tales told by one of the crew.
