Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

History of the Carthusian Order: Silence, Solitude, and Spiritual Power by Sidney Goodwin is a sweeping and deeply engaging exploration of one of the most mysterious and spiritually powerful traditions in Christian history. From its dramatic beginnings in the wild mountains of eleventh-century France under the guidance of Saint Bruno of Cologne to its quiet endurance in the modern world, this book traces the extraordinary story of the Carthusian monks-men who chose radical silence, solitude, and prayer as their path to God.Drawing on primary sources, medieval chronicles, and modern scholarship, Goodwin unveils the hidden world of the charterhouse: the solitary cells where monks live as hermits within a community, the night offices sung in candlelit chapels, and the profound spiritual theology that shaped Western mysticism. The narrative brings to life the saints, martyrs, scholars, and mystics of the order, revealing how their hidden lives influenced the Church across centuries of reform, revolution, persecution, and renewal.Rich with historical insight, vivid biographical episodes, and thoughtful theological reflection, this book demonstrates how the Carthusians preserved an ancient contemplative wisdom that continues to speak powerfully to the modern world. In an age defined by noise and constant activity, their witness reminds readers of the enduring power of silence. Both an accessible historical narrative and a profound meditation on the contemplative life, History of the Carthusian Order invites readers to discover how a community devoted to solitude became one of the most enduring spiritual forces in Christian history.
