Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Has modern history left you unsatisfied with sanitized, over-simplified versions of the past? Do you long to step beyond textbook summaries and experience the raw, dangerous reality of the 10th-century Balkans-where religious fervor meant geopolitical war, and a single priest's sermons could threaten the stability of empires? In Satan's Earthly Empire, historian Winston Maddox delivers an unsparing, meticulously researched narrative of the Bogomil heresy. When Tsar Peter I struggled to maintain control over a collapsing First Bulgarian Empire, a parish priest named Bogomil preached a doctrine that shattered medieval orthodoxy. He declared that physical reality was not created by God, but by Satanail-and that the Church, the Tsar, and the Cross itself were instruments of demonic illusion. This is not a dry academic text; it is an immersive historical journey. You will stand in the cold stone churches of Preslav as Orthodox clergy write desperate anathemas, feel the social unrest gripping rural serfs forced to choose between imperial taxes and radical asceticism, and follow secret dualist networks across Macedonia into Constantinople. For the reader who demands rigorous primary sources, sharp historical context, and an unvarnished look at how fringe ideas shape civilization, this book offers an indispensable exploration of the roots of European dualism. Are you ready to discover the forgotten heresy that birthed the Cathars and shook the medieval world to its core?
