Learn Latin Through a Wider Roman WorldYou can read Latin. Now let it take you beyond Rome.Learn Latin with Gens et Gloria 2: In Mauretania Tingitana continues the advanced Latin novel series during the reign of Trajan, carrying the story from Rome to Mauretania Tingitana, the Roman province in what is now northern Morocco.Written for advanced readers, it combines sustained, idiomatic Latin with a story of marriage, military duty, theatre, religion and life on the Roman frontier. It continues at approximately the C1 stage within the Latina Laeta progression. From Rome to Roman AfricaNewly married to Cassia, Lucius Vibius Florus travels to Mauretania Tingitana, where the responsibilities of command bring new challenges. In and around Volubilis, Roman administration exists alongside older traditions and beliefs. Roman, Punic and local Mauretanian influences meet in a society of soldiers and civilians, officials and performers. Cassia discovers this unfamiliar world in her own way, while Lucius confronts the uncertainties of frontier life.Elsewhere, Dracontius and his fellow performers bring comedy, spectacle and unpredictability. Performances draw crowds, rumours spread, old beliefs persist-and what begins as entertainment does not always remain harmless.Read Latin. Discover the Empire. In Mauretania Tingitana is the second novel in Gens et Gloria, the advanced continuation of the Latina Laeta reading programme. An English introduction provides the historical and cultural background to Roman Mauretania, Volubilis and frontier life. The emphasis remains on sustained reading: follow the story through context and momentum rather than stopping to translate every sentence.Ideal for advanced Latin students, independent learners, teachers seeking full-length Latin fiction, and experienced Latinists who want to explore Roman Africa through a novel written in Latin.Professor Terence Tunberg, University of Kentucky, writes:Hoc volumen in manus sumite, O lectores! Hoc volumen evolvite! [...] Ibitis in Mauretaniam Tingitanam, ubi cum leonibus et legionibus versabimini, in mapalibus et tuguriis, in oppidis et urbibus res mirabiles videbitis.Rome was only the beginning.
