The word "except" is never casual. It signals a categorical exclusion-a boundary that cannot be crossed unless a specific, transformative condition is met. It implies that a fixed state prevails until something greater intervenes. Without that intervention, a man remains exactly what he is: confined, limited, unchanged.

If someone says, "No one can survive that desert," and you answer, "Except a man who has a plan and the determination to do so," you are not overturning the laws of nature, you are simply naming the narrow margin of human agency. You are acknowledging that while the natural order stands, a man may, by willpower or intellect or resilience, push against its edges. But even then, he remains bound by humanity's ceiling.

The man who begins the journey is never the man who finishes it. To transcend, the natural man must undergo a fundamental change of operating system. There is no middle ground. You are either limited by your humanity, or you have been transformed by something beyond it. Until "except a man" reaches the end of his own strength, he cannot witness the beginning of God's power.

This transition, from internal effort to external intervention, is the work of the Lord. Sometimes it is instant; often it unfolds over years. Many imagine this season as a "waiting room," because the flesh prefers passivity while still hoping to enjoy the spoils. But God does not train men in waiting rooms. He trains them in schoolrooms, places of intention, rigor, and development. In the waiting room, you watch your life. In the schoolroom, you participate in its curriculum.

And in that schoolroom, things that appear to be one thing are revealed to be another.

Consider Bethabara, the crossing point of the Jordan, where Jesus was baptized by the greatest prophet the Old Testament produced. We often assume Moses or Elijah held that title, yet Jesus Himself gives it to John. Bethabara is a place of crossings: Elijah ascended there in a chariot of fire; Joshua led Israel across there into the Promised Land; and there the manna ceased, marking the end of the old and the beginning of the new.

During Joshua's crossing, one man from each tribe took a stone from the riverbed and built a memorial on the far bank. Joshua himself placed twelve stones beneath the water where the ark had stood. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan, did He not stand upon those very stones, the stones of Yeshua, declaring Himself the bridge between the Old Covenant and the New?

A cornerstone must be laid on a firm, level foundation. The twelve submerged stones provided that foundation. But a cornerstone must also face the direction of the structure it will anchor. The twelve stones on the riverbank served as that directional beacon. Layer upon layer, Scripture reveals its treasures; stone upon stone, it builds into our lives.
