For many years now, I have begun my day with the Lord by reading a psalm. The psalms were originally written to be sung (which I don't do well!), but most of them also are heartfelt prayers. So I try to pray the psalms back to the Lord, applying them to myself, my family, and whomever else the Lord may bring to mind. As I point out in the introductory chapter, Calvin wrote that the psalms reflect the whole gamut of our human emotions. They teach us much about the character of God, and much about ourselves, which Calvin also pointed out is the sum of all knowledge. So I hope to motivate you to become a habitual reader (and pray-er) of the psalms. This is the first of four projected volumes on the Psalms.
