Achlys was the Greek goddess of misery and poison. She survives in only a handful of ancient lines: a figure of nightmare on the Shield of Heracles, and in Homer the grey film that falls across the eyes of the dying. Yet the Greeks gave her a name for the dimming of sight itself, the veil that grief and poison draw between us and the world.

This book gathers Achlys's few surviving verses and reads them where they lead: into Greek medicine, where her poisons were pharmaka, the same word for what could cure in one dose and kill in another, and into modern psychology.
