Women of the Kingdom: Devotions from 1 & 2 KingsEchoes of Faith in the Days of Kings and ChaosWhat can the women of 1 and 2 Kings teach us about faith, grief, courage, influence, failure, belonging, and the faithfulness of God?In the turbulent days of Israel's kings, women appear in palaces and humble homes, in moments of extraordinary courage and heartbreaking loss. Some, like the Queen of Sheba, Jezebel, the widow of Zarephath, the Shunammite woman, Jehosheba, and Huldah, are part of unforgettable biblical accounts. Others are mentioned only briefly-a name, a hometown, a family connection, or a single line of Scripture. This devotional stops for all of them.Rather than rushing past the women whose stories are small on the page, Marydell J. Potter looks carefully at what Scripture preserves. Some devotions grow from a woman's words and actions. Others explore the meaning of a name, the circumstances surrounding her mention, or a biblical truth opened by one small detail.Within these pages, you will encounter women who trusted, grieved, questioned, protected, influenced, suffered, sought wisdom, misused power, spoke truth, endured exile, and sometimes left behind only a name for us to notice. Their lives lead us into themes such as identity, comparison, control, provision, courage, repentance, spiritual influence, suffering, restoration, and the security of belonging to God.But this is more than a collection of lessons about biblical women.Against the backdrop of divided kingdoms, failed rulers, idolatry, judgment, mercy, and exile, 1 and 2 Kings continually reveal humanity's need for a better King. Again and again, these women ultimately turn our eyes toward Jesus Christ-the faithful Son of David whose wisdom does not fail, whose authority is never corrupted, and whose kingdom will never end.Written in a warm, reflective, Christ-centered style, Women of the Kingdom: Devotions from 1 & 2 Kings invites you to slow down, notice the women you may have read past before, and discover how even the briefest biblical mention can open the door to a deeper understanding of Scripture and the heart of God.For the woman who loves the Bible, wants to grow deeper in her faith, and believes no life recorded in Scripture is too small to stop and notice.
