The narrative centers around Detective Jess Blair who takes on a case when her former lover Tim Ames mysteriously falls into a coma after encountering an entity called UBIX. Ames, a retired professor, lives in a smart house located in the forests of Humboldt County, California. Blair soon discovers a connection between Ames and others who have also mysteriously fallen into comas. The enigmatic entity calling itself UBIX claims to be part of a collective alien consciousness that has evolved away from physical form. UBIX seeks omniscience by gathering knowledge from life forms throughout the universe. Blair is in a race against time as she learns that many of the others have not survived and Ames body is failing.
