Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis is a Gothic novel first published in 1796. It tells the dark and sensational story of Ambrosio, a highly respected monk in Madrid, who is admired for his piety and virtue. However, beneath this façade lies a man vulnerable to temptation.Ambrosio falls from grace when he is seduced by Matilda, a woman disguised as a novice monk. Their illicit relationship triggers a descent into corruption, lust, and eventually murder. As Ambrosio commits increasingly heinous acts-including rape, sorcery, and a pact with the Devil-his soul becomes entangled in evil. The novel explores themes of hypocrisy, repression, temptation, and the supernatural.Filled with gothic tropes like haunted convents, secret passages, ghosts, and demonic interventions, The Monk is both a thrilling and cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked desire and religious hypocrisy.
