Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Canadian Fairy Tales by Cyrus Macmillan is a collection of stories that reflects Canada's unique cultural identity and landscape. Published in 1924, the book brings together fairy tales inspired by Indigenous legends, French-Canadian folklore, and European traditions. Macmillan's goal was to adapt these stories in a way that highlighted Canadian culture and history. Through magical events and memorable characters, the tales introduce readers to Canada's values and the spirit of its people. One of the most important features of the book is the role of nature. Unlike many European fairy tales set in castles or villages, these stories often take place in forests, rivers, and wilderness areas. Nature is not just a background but an active force that shapes events and tests characters. This reflects Canada's vast landscapes and shows how people must respect and adapt to the natural world. Themes such as bravery, kindness, and perseverance appear often, teaching lessons about human behavior and morality.Overall, Canadian Fairy Tales is significant because it helped define an early Canadian voice in literature. Although some elements reflect the attitudes of its time, the book remains valuable for understanding how folklore was used to express national identity. Macmillan's collection shows how storytelling can preserve culture, convey moral lessons, and connect readers to the land. For these reasons, the book continues to be studied and appreciated today.
