Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

Rugby league began with a dispute over fairness and became one of the most distinctive sports in the world. Born in northern England in 1895, the thirteen-player code grew from the realities of working life, lost wages, industrial towns, local pride, and the determination of clubs that believed working players deserved better treatment. From the George Hotel meeting in Huddersfield to the first Northern Union seasons, from the Challenge Cup to Wembley, the game carried the marks of the communities that created it. The Rugby League Story traces the sport's journey through its northern roots, rule changes, professional identity, club rivalries, international tours, Australian influence, French rugby à treize, post-war crowds, Super League, women's rugby league, wheelchair rugby league, and the modern global game. Written in a clear, narrative, fact-based style, it follows how rugby league became a game of speed, toughness, local loyalty, and constant reinvention while never losing sight of the working-class argument that gave it life. This book is suitable for readers who want a readable, historically grounded account of rugby league's origins, culture, competitions, and evolution. It is a story of thirteen players on a field, but also of towns, crowds, wages, pride, hardship, spectacle, and survival.
