Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The book opens with a single working principle: read the dog before you train the dog. Everything else is detail. What looks like training - the reliable recall, the calm settle, the clean leash work - is the surface. The work that produces those behaviors is everything underneath: the handler's emotional regulation, the dog's nervous-system state, and the trust accumulated between them over thousands of small interactions. The behaviors are built from that foundation, not laid on top of an untrained dog through technique alone. The opening chapter introduces Atlas - a Czech shepherd who came to the author as a last resort before euthanasia, after his previous handler's psychological breakdown turned him into a serious-bite case. What worked, on the day Atlas bit hard enough to send the handler to the hospital, wasn't a technique. It was a state: the author held position, held regulation, did not show fear or pain, did not retaliate or retreat. The technical rehabilitation that followed was the technical rehabilitation any case requires. But it could only happen because the dog's nervous system had learned, through the worst it could offer, that there was a human who stayed regulated. That moment - and the framework that lets a handler produce that moment - is what the rest of the book is trying to teach.
