Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

The language of this work is carefully chosen for an Eastern Orthodox register, with the hope that all sides of the Eastern-Oriental Orthodox divide may receive it favorably. The author readily acknowledges that the Tome of Leo cannot itself be Orthodox for Oriental Orthodox, but the Tome is strategically addressed so that the reader may clearly perceive what is missing and lacking in both the Tome and the Council of Chalcedon in the eyes of the Oriental Orthodox.

The book discusses how Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches have reached theological joint-agreements concerning christology in the twentieth century, yet, dialogue has stalled, and unity appears to be a distant reality. By the nineties, Neo-Chalcedonianism of the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox theology fell within the bounds of Orthodox thinking, the joint statements confirmed. Nevertheless, a major point of disagreement was and still is the Tome of Leo, and therefore the theological cumulation of the council of Chalcedon. Thus, a number of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox members could not apprehend how theologians came to agreement on christology without addressing such discrepancy.

After discussing the history and theology involved, using the christological parameters set by Cyril of Alexandria and Gregory Nazianzen, this monograph contextualizes and embeds the Tome of Leo employing language used and approved by the fifth ecumenical council of AD 553 and Maximus the Confessor (AD 662). This neo-tome, the Embedded Tome, would be deemed Orthodox for the Eastern Orthodox since it's simply a combination of their own patristic corpus and the Tome of Leo with no novelty in language, while it would be deemed Orthodox for the Oriental Orthodox, since it would match Cyrillian contextualization and early patristic consensus. In hope of advancing dialogue, the aim of this book includes the two Orthodox families understanding each other at the very least, with unity in Truth (in the One incarnate Son of God) being inserted (with urgency) at the forefront of all Orthodox Christians. Only then would the Orthodox evangelical calling be maximized, as Christ himself desired (Cf. John 17:20-23).
