Kurzbeschreibung des Verlags

What happens when relief becomes easier than feeling?A man takes two pills before his shift. One is for his back - nineteen years of the same motion earned him that one honestly. The other is for a tightness in his chest that arrives before the day has given him a reason. He described it to a doctor once. That was two years ago, and the prescription now refills itself two days before the bottle empties, so there has never been a morning when taking it was a decision.Nobody has asked him since what the tightness was about. He is not in crisis. He works, he keeps his marriage, his employer has no complaint. If you asked how he was, he would say fine, and he would not be lying.Numb argues that what happened to him is not a private failure but part of a widespread arrangement. Numbness did not spread because people became weak. It spread because it worked. It made relentless work bearable, softened anxiety, filled the silence, and kept people moving through a world that rarely stops long enough to ask what the movement is costing. Most of it arrives as help. A prescription that quiets the mornings. A feed that fills four empty minutes. A crowd that feels something enormous on your behalf. Each delivers what it promises, quickly and reliably. The relief is real. That is precisely why it is so difficult to notice what else it removes. These are not separate habits. They are versions of the same trade, conducted in different currencies. A man gets sober and finds the phone. A woman quits the gym and finds the wine. A teenager loses the feed and within weeks has found something else, while the adults who took it away wonder why nothing changed.Take one away and another arrives, because the thing being served was never the drink, the screen, or the doctrine. Beneath them is a pressure none of them resolves - and it goes on producing demand for all of them. From there, Numb widens into work, technology, belonging, meaning, and the quiet arithmetic of power. It asks what happens to a society that remains productive, connected, and outwardly stable while losing its grip on what that stability costs - and what it means that a numbed population may be easier to govern, whether or not anyone designed it that way.It is not a self-improvement program and it does not name a villain. It is an inquiry into a condition many people will recognize before they can describe it, and into the small interval between a feeling and whatever ends it - the interval in which people once had time to discover what the feeling meant.Because what is postponed does not disappear. What goes unfelt does not stop mattering. And when feeling finally returns, it may not arrive as clarity. It may arrive as consequence.
